Cypripedium Lawrenceanum var. Ardens (Lindenia, Pl. DCCXCIV)

[Ghent]: Lindenia: Iconographie des Orchidées, 1880s.

10 1/2" x 14" Chromolithograph plate (no. DCCXCIV): two magenta-and-cream slipper orchids, their dorsal sepals heavily veined and striped in deep purple, rising above a fan of dark green leaves mottled nearly black. Captioned Cypripedium Lawrenceanum Rchb. f. var. Ardens L. Lind., with the accompanying French text leaf describing the variety as first flowered in Linden's Moortebeek nursery. Matted.

The species commemorates Sir Trevor Lawrence, the physician and longtime president of the Royal Horticultural Society whose own orchid houses were among the most celebrated of Victorian England. Lindenia, issued in parts from Ghent between 1885 and 1906, was Jean Linden's serial chromolithographed record of newly flowered orchids and remains a standard reference for the period's hybrids.
