Dendrobium Thyrsiflorum
[Ghent]: L'Illustration Horticole, 1882–1886.
10" x 12 1/2" Chromolithograph plate on a charcoal ground: a dense, pendant raceme of white-petaled flowers with vivid orange-and-red throats, shown trailing from a jointed cane beneath a pair of glossy leaves. Captioned Dendrobium Thyrsiflorum, Reichb. fil. Light vertical crease at center from the original fold. Matted.
Dendrobium thyrsiflorum, native to the humid forests of Burma, Yunnan, and Laos, was prized by nineteenth-century collectors for its densely packed, fragrant blooms. L'Illustration Horticole reviewed noteworthy new plants on a monthly basis from 1854 to 1896, pairing each colored plate with botanical description and cultivation advice; Jean Linden — the Belgian orchid hunter and nurseryman behind L'Horticulture Internationale — assumed control of the review in 1869.
