Asie.
Paris: A. Combette, 1854. Folio (approx. 14 × 20 inches image). Steel engraving with outline hand-coloring. Engraved by Laguillermie; border illustrations by Raimond Bonheur. Framed and matted in cream mats with gilt-line border.
Map and decorative border in very good condition; hand-coloring intact and clean.
One of six continental maps in Levasseur’s Atlas National Illustré, and among the most visually elaborate plates in the work. The wide steel-engraved border frames the central map of Asia with allegorical figures, oval vignettes of Asian peoples and landscapes, and flanking panels of statistical and population data. The border illustrations are the work of Raimond Bonheur (1796–1849), landscape painter and father of the celebrated animal painter Rosa Bonheur. Victor Levasseur (1800–1870) was a French cartographer and engineer whose atlas, issued in successive editions from the 1840s through the 1870s, was among the last of the great decorative atlas traditions of the nineteenth century.
