One of the most detailed French maps of the United States issued during the era of westward expansion, engraved for Buchon’s French edition of Carey & Lea’s American Atlas. The map depicts the nation at a pivotal moment: Oregon Territory stretches west of the Rockies, Mexico still holds Texas and the southwest, and Native American settlements are noted throughout the trans-Mississippi west. Jean Alexandre Buchon (1791–1849) was a French historian whose principal geographical contribution was this 1825 Paris edition of the atlas, each plate accompanied by detailed statistical and historical text.
