États-Unis d'Amérique

États-Unis d'Amérique

Paris: J. Carez, 1825. Folio (16 × 21 inches). Copper engraving, hand-colored in outline and wash. Engraved by Ales after the map of the United States by John Melish.

Unframed. Fold lines present throughout; wrinkling and light soiling to the lower left quadrant. Hand-coloring intact and generally clean.

One of the most detailed French maps of the United States issued during the era of westward expansion, engraved for Buchon’s French edition of Carey & Lea’s American Atlas. The map depicts the nation at a pivotal moment: Oregon Territory stretches west of the Rockies, Mexico still holds Texas and the southwest, and Native American settlements are noted throughout the trans-Mississippi west. Jean Alexandre Buchon (1791–1849) was a French historian whose principal geographical contribution was this 1825 Paris edition of the atlas, each plate accompanied by detailed statistical and historical text.
