Der Schauspieldirektor was composed in 1786 on commission from Emperor Joseph II for a court entertainment at Schönbrunn Palace. The autograph manuscript, held in the Morgan Library's Mary Flagler Cary Music Collection, is among the most complete surviving Mozart autographs in American hands.
