Octavo. 624 pages. With the etched frontispiece and title page and 38 other illustrations by H.K. Browne (Phiz). The pages are clean but there is variable foxing to the plates. Bound by Riviere in three-quarter green leather and marbled paper, with matching endpaper and marbling to all page edges. Five raised bands with six compartments richly tooled in gilt, with the title and date. 

FIRST EDITION with the early issue points: "screamed" for "screwed" on page 132 line 20, Chapter XXVII is on page 282 rather than page 283; "recal" rather than "recall" on page 16 and 225; "cha pter ; ut" on page 19; "coroboration" rather "corroboration" on page 387; no closing of the quotation marks on page 472; and the first state of the engraved vignette title page with a date.

"The unusual stamp on the title was applied by John Brymer, he had purchased the Puddleton estate and Ilsinton House where he lived from the Walpole's family and on his death hoped that the books would become a part of a a perpetual entailed heirloom - alas not." (Marlborough Rate Books).
