FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS, 20 parts in 19. 40 wood-engraved illustrations by Marcus Stone. Original green pictorial wrappers. Some of the parts have been rebacked in matching paper. Edges of most covers are worn and/or trimmed. Contemporary owner’s signature to upper cover of part 3, bookseller’s stamp on cover of part 10. Repairs to covers of parts 1, 9 and 18. Part 1 is especially worn. In green folding case.


A first issue with most relevant points. Part 1: printer’s imprint not present on upper cover, slip before the first page of text, 4 pages of ads for “Thorley”; Part 6: includes orange slip for “Armadale”; Part 10: page 13 is misprinted “31” in the ads at the front; Part 11: includes “Headless Horseman” slip at the rear; Part 12: includes Headless Horseman” slip at the rear, the “People’s Pickwick” ad after the plates, as well as the “Norton’s Pill” and “Mappin Webb” ads; Part 14: the ad for “The Economic Life Assurance Society” is missing; Part 18: includes the yellow slip for “At the Bar”; Part 19: includes the 4-page ad for “The Economic Life Assurance Society”; Parts 19 and 20: green slip for “Foreign Bank Note” is missing.
