Engraved title page and other engravings by various artists (a frontisportrait of the Princess of Wales engraved by George Vertue after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller, a vignette engraved by Elisha Kirkall after the original by Peter Berchet, and others by Louis Du Guernier the younger, Michael Van der gucht, R. Smith, and Matthys Pool). Contemporary mottled calf, tooled in blind with floral corner pieces. Rebacked with leather spine label and new endpapers. Some rubbing and wear with loss at the edges.
First thus. This luxuriously printed folio was among the last books published by Jacob Tonson the elder. It was dedicated to Caroline, Princess of Wales, and her portrait forms the frontispiece. Each of the fifteen books was prefixed by an engraving with a dedication to an eminent (usually titled) lady, whose name was inscribed to accompany her coat of arms. The entire work was edited by the poet and physician Sir Samuel Garth, who contributed translations of the whole of Book XIV and part of Book XV as well as an introduction and preface. The other translators were Joseph Addison, Alexander Catcott, William Congreve, Samuel Croxall, John Dryden, Laurence Eusden, John Gay, Stephen Harvey, Arthur Maynwaring, John Ozell, Alexander Pope, Nicholas Rowe, Temple Stanyan, William Stonestreet, Nahum Tate, Thomas Vernon, Leonard Welsted.
